Alex Cline, PhD

Alex Cline is a technical instructor and programme leader who has spent the last decade making cloud computing, DevOps tooling, and scalable AI deployment teachable — from first-year programming to degree apprenticeships and government-funded bootcamps.

He is currently Senior Lecturer in Information Systems (DevOps) at Queen Mary, University of London, teaching programming, software engineering tools and practices, and cloud computing with generative AI. There he serves as Deputy Programme Lead for digital apprenticeships in Science & Engineering, oversees final project supervision, and is the school's Director of Employability and Graduate Outcomes.

Before Queen Mary he was Assistant Professor of Cloud Engineering at Northeastern University's London campus, where he led a government-funded cloud bootcamp with ServiceNow, the Refugee Council, and the Department for Education — a programme that reached hundreds of students across England and helped make higher education and tech roles accessible. He developed degree-apprenticeship courses spanning distributed systems, cloud computing, IT service management, and organisational behaviour, and was NULab Core Faculty and a CATLR Teaching Fellow.

His teaching career began at Ada National College for Digital Skills, where he built curricula in programming, relational databases, distributed systems, and data engineering for higher and degree apprenticeships — and built much of the cloud infrastructure that delivered them.

He holds a PhD in Digital Platforms from Anglia Ruskin University's Storylab (CoDE Doctoral Scholarship), with research visits to the universities of Huelva, Padova, and Łódź; an MA in Digital Media from the University of Sussex; and a BA in Philosophy, Culture and Media from The New School.

He is an AWS Educate Faculty Ambassador, a Google Cloud Platform Faculty Expert, a member of the British Computer Society, and a Library and Data Carpentries instructor.
